Macbeth Vs. Beowulf

Aleccia Wilkerson

To me a good leader is someone who takes care of their people, leads them in a good direction, and keeps them from harm. I will be looking at the difference leadership styles of Macbeth and Beowulf. Macbeth said to be a dictator, evil, and unstable, and in the film, Beowulf said to be kind, caring, and willing to die for his people. I will talk about how each got into power and what they did with it and how much their wives played a role in their accention to the throne.
In the movie, Beowulf traveled far to get to Hrothgar and kill Grendel for him. He was seeking nothing more that glory, and wanted to live on in the heart of men. The only two flaw that Beowulf has are his pride and his weakness for women. Like when he was told to go and kill Grendel’s mother, he ends up sleeping with her with the promise of kingship. When he returns form “killing” Grendel’s mother the king announces that he wants Beowulf to take his place as king and husband to Wealhtheow. Hrothgar then jumps out the window, killing himself. Beowulf accepts place as king and tries to be the best king he can be. He is loved by his people and his people love him. Wealhtheow supports him and the country with pride and does so until the day he dies.
In the beginning, Macbeth is a timid and kind person. That is until the witches come and speak of a prophesy that tells of him being king. Macbeth realizes that this is impossible seeing as how Duncan is still king. He comes up with a plan to get rid of Duncan and his sons to attain the crown. He ends up telling his wife of the plan and tells him that she wants him to be queen too. When Macbeth starts changing his mind about killing the king, his wife steps in and makes him man up. She said she would have done it herself if he hadn’t looked like her father. When Macbeth gets the crown he does any and everything to keep it, going to such great lengths as killing his best friend and attempting to kill his son and killing his people. By ths time, he is crazy and so is his wife, having nightmares of death and being caught. Macbeth and his wife are killed and the rightful ruler returns to the throne.
In the end, both had flaws that truly and greatly set them back from living long lives or achieving greatness. Macbeth could have been a great leader if he had waited to come into power or if he hadn’t had bloodshed on his hands and soul. Beowulf was a great leader, but under false pretenses. Had Grendel’s mother been killed like she was supposed to then maybe he would have stay alive longer. All in all, they ruled and died, passed the kingdom to the next generation.

Beowulf: The story Vs. The movie

Beowulf: The story Vs. The movie

Beowulf the story and the movie are both very good and go into great detail whether visually or using wonderful imagery. They both have great things in common but their strengths are in the differences. There are three main differences for me that stood out. In the film Grendel hates noise, while in the text the writer portrays him as curious about why they're all so quiet. The second difference is that Grendel's mother was never killed in the film but in the text she was beheaded, the third difference is the location in which the dragons was killed.

The first difference  I noticed is that Grendel hated loud noise. In the movie, while the queen is singing softly, far away in a cave, Grendel is screaming and tearing at his exposed eardrums. Grendel comes down and kills off most of Beowulf's men, until finally, Beowulf destroys him by using his weakness for loud sounds. Beowulf is able to quickly destroy Grendel and rip off his arm. Grendel starts shrinking back to human size and dies when he returns back to his cave. While in the story, Grendel only came to Herot to see what the men did while they were so quiet.

The second major difference for me was that Grendel's mother was never killed in the movie. Instead she seduced Beowulf and offered him promises of riches, fame, and to live forever in the hearts and minds of men. All he had to do was 1) bear her a child and 2) give her the golden drinking horn. When Beowulf returns back to the King Hrothgar he boast that he killed the wretched hag known as Grendel's mother. The King seemed to know that he was lying but didn't push it. He named Beowulf the heir of his kingdom and the keeper of all his gold and the future husband to his wife. The King then jumps out of a castle window. In contrast to the film, Beowulf kills Grendel's mother and returns home to Sweden.

The third and final difference was the location in which he fought the dragon. In the story, Beowulf  returned home to Sweden and is crowned king. A dragon comes and attacks his town . Beowulf , the epic hero,  gets badly hurt and is near death. Wiglaf comes and assist him in killing the dragon for with him. In the movie, Beowulf never leaves Denmark and is successful in killing the dragon. In the dragon is actually his son. Beowulf cuts the dragon in his vulnerable spot to save his wife and the other woman. He and his son end up dying on the beach, but not before he names Wiglaf the new king.

In conclusion, Grendel hates noises in the movie but in the book he is intrigued  by the quietness, Grendel's mother doesn't die, and the dragon is fought and killed in two different places. I think that both the movie and book are well written and go into great depth, and even though they drift off into different directions, they ultimately teach the same valuable lesson of never let pride get the best of you.

Why I like Mary E. Phillips dress code

I like the dress code because no one argues over who is wearing what, you don't have to worry about what to wear in the morning, and because it makes dress down Mondays special. I hope that people will realize that dressing down can save time, stress, and keep you from worrying. I think dress codes create a stabilized environment and productive students. Not a lot of flashy colors and distracting.

If everyone is wearing the same thing then no one can really pick on someone for wearing khakis or white/black/grey T-shirt. This leaves little to no room to argue, and again keeps class room distractions down amazingly. Bullying has become a major problem everywhere, and though a change in the way people dress may not fix it completely, it cuts it back. And every little victory counts with something like bullying.

I, for one, am very glad that I do not have to worry about what I need to wear almost every day. I no longer have to stress about if the outfit I picked out last night will look as good as I think. I have anxiety and I know that if I can deal with one less problem then I would happily do so. It keeps me from running late to school and from missing my bus every morning and being able to eat a full and healthy breakfast.

If we had Christmas or and great holiday everyday, then what would be so special about it? Nothing. Somethings are great because they only come once every so often. Dress down Mondays is the same way for me. I get to look forward to that one day where I can show who I am through the way I dress. I get to show off my style in all it's glory and weirdness, and so does everyone else.

In conclusion, I agree with the dress code. Many people may not love it but they chose to come to this school and they have to accept it. It saves time because you already know what you are wearing, it keeps the bullying level down at least a little, and it makes expressing yourself more fun. The dress code may not be the best but it makes for a near cool and collected school.

I am, I can, I will

Aleccia Wilkerson
9/23/14
Period 2
I am, I can, I will

I am the daughter of strong women.
The leader of future generations
And other women and men.
I am the problem solver
And the answer to every question asked.
I am.

I can be what tomorrow needs
I can be the reason our world remains
Clean and healthy and thriving
Along with other leaders from my generation.
I can.

I will be the best me I can be.
I will be capable of more than I could possibly know.
I will show all that I’ve got
Even when times get tough.

I will.
